Periodicities in Solar Flare Occurrence: Analysis of Cycles 19–23
Mid-range periodicities in solar flare occurrence have been analyzed with new methods for cycles 19–23. During cycle 23, periodicities of 129-d and 33.5-d were in operation. Five episodes of high activity occurred periodically with the 129-d period. The 33.5-d periodicity mainly operated for energetic flares. Results for cycles 19–21 are generally in agreement with previous analyses. For cycle ...
متن کاملNonlocal communication in self-organising models of solar flare occurrence
Recent avalanche models of solar flare occurrence which consider the magnetised solar atmosphere to be in a state of self-organised criticality have concentrated mainly on the magnetic field as the means by which individual energy release sites communicate with neighbouring sites. This, however, neglects the possibility of remote triggering of energy release via fast particles. In this paper we...
متن کاملRegularized Energy-dependent Solar Flare Hard X-ray Spectral Index
The deduction from solar flare X-ray photon spectroscopic data of the energy dependent model-independent spectral index is considered as an inverse problem. Using the well developed regularization approach we analyze the energy dependency of spectral index for a high resolution energy spectrum provided by Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI). The regularization technique produ...
متن کاملSolar Flare Cycles
We present a review of different solar flare periodicity intervals. Our analysis includes a statistical investigation of flare occurrence and N-S hemispheric distribution over the last three 11-yr solar cycles (SCs 21-23, corresponding to the period 1976-2001). Moreover, we try to estimate if there is any connection between the flare activity and the strength of solar cycles. For that purpose, ...
متن کاملThe Origin of the Solar Flare Waiting-Time Distribution.
It was recently pointed out that the distribution of times between solar flares (the flare waiting-time distribution) follows a power law for long waiting times. Based on 25 years of soft X-ray flares observed by Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite instruments, it is shown that (1) the waiting-time distribution of flares is consistent with a time-dependent Poisson process and (2) ...
